NEWS AND INFORMATION ON THE NFL DRAFT |
Please note times reported below are unofficial
and have not
been adjusted for differences in running
surfaces.
| School |
Notes |
| Utah State II (30/03) |
USU LB Bobby Wagner,
who missed the combine and the Aggies’ original pro day because of
pneumonia had a very good day at a supplementary pro day at Utah State.
The 6-1, 241-pound Wagner was unofficially time in under 4.50
seconds for the 40; even factoring in the normal tenth that gets added
to on-campus workout times, figure that Wagner still ran in the sub-4.6
range. And the rest of Wagner’s workout was just as good; he had a
vertical jump of 39.5 inches and an 11-0 BJ, while posting 24 reps in
the BP and a time of 7.09 seconds in the 3-cone agility drill. For the
record, all Wagner’s numbers would have been among the leaders at the
position at the combine. |
| Alabama II (29/03) |
All 32 NFL teams were
back in Tuscaloosa for the follow-up Alabama pro day. Included in the
crowd were head coaches Bill Belichek of New England and Dallas'
Jason Garrett, while Cleveland sent a full contingent including GM Tom
Heckert and head coach Pat Schumur. Unfortunately, there don't appear
to be any official numbers and some that have leaked out likely have to
be factored up. Early reports, for example, had RB Trent Richardson,
who weighed in at 5-10, 227, running in the '4.45-4.49 range', but his
hand-timed 40 was probably a full tenth slower than tht which may put
his final time in the low 4.6 range. Same for SS MArk Barron, whose
unofficial 40 times were reported as in mid-4.5 range, but was also
likely more likely in the mid-4.6 range once adjusted for the home
court advantage. Neither time is particularly impressive, although both
were also pretty close to what weas expected. On the other hand, OLB
Courtney Upshaw's estimated time in the 4.8 range has to be considered
disappointing. Richardson, though, looked cut and powerful at 227
pounds and posetd 25 reps in the BP. He also looked smooth in postional
drills and had everyone chuckling after he knocked potential future
position coach Gary Brown in a blocing drill. Meanwhile, Barron also
looked smooth in positional drills after posting a vertical of 34.5
inches and a 10-2 BJ, while Upshaw rgisietered a 9-1 BJ. |
| South Carolina (28/03) |
All but two NFL teams
were represented at the South Carolina pro day including Jets head
coach Rex Ryan. And many pro personnel were there to see what kind of
shape WR Alshon Jeffrey was in. In fact, had trimmed down three more
pounds from the combine to 213 pounds after playing at as many as 233
last fall. Jeffrey also reportedly ran in the '4.5 ange' however with
the rule of thumb for pro days that you add a tenth to reported times
figure that he ran closer to the 4.6 mark. Jeffrey also had a 36.5
vertical and leaped 10-2 in the BJ. Meanwhile, CB Marty Markett, a
track guy on who only earned a football scholarship at USC last fall,
made like a track star as he posted a 40.-inch vertical and 10-10 BJ
although at just 166 pounds appeared a little on the lean side for a
pro football prospect. |
| Vanderbilt (23/03) |
As many as 20 teams
were represented at the Vanderbilt workout including a large contingent
from Tennessee. DE Tim Fugger may have put himself on the draft/free
agent radar when he ran in the 4.6 ange for the 40 and posted 29 reps
in the BP, while TE Brandon Barden reportedly ran in the mid-to-high
4.6s. |
| Stanford (22/03) |
The Stanford pro day just wrapped and by all accounts QB Andrew Luck did nothing to jeopardize his status as the presumptive #1 pick at the 2012 draft. Throwing outdoors in blustery conditions before a packed house that even included former Secretary of State Condeleeza Rice, a stanford grad known to be a huge football fan, Luck showed excellent footwork, a very smooth delivery and enough arm strength to make all the throws. Meanwhile, TE Coby Fleener had a strong day running the 40 in a hand-timed mid-4.5 range that will probably translate to the low-t-mid 4.6 range. Fleener also had a 37-inch vertical. Interesting, also that OG David DeCastro, who like Luck is considered to be the top prospect at his position for the upcoming draft, worked at C on the request of a number of teams. |
| LSU (22/03) |
There was a full house,
including head coaches Leslie Frazier of Minnesota, Mike Tomlin of
Pittsburgh and Rex Ryan of the Jets, at the LSU pro day. The big news
of the day though was off the field as star CB Morris Claiborne, a top
5 prospect for the upcoming draft, announced that he will have wrist
surgery later this week to repair a torn ligament suffered in the
Tigers' regular-season OT win over Alabama; Claiborne played with the
injury the rest of the season. Just to make a statement, though,
Claiborne ran a hand-timed 40 at the Tigers' pro day under 4.4 seconds,
although once adjusted its actually likely to be closer to his 4.46
time recorded at the combine. In fact, most of LSU's legitimate
prospects for the 2012 draft stood on their combine numbers. QB Jarrett
Lee (6-2, 209), though, ran in the 5-flat range for the 40; same for
OLB Stefoin Francois (6-0.5, 223). At the same time, OG Will Blackwell
(6-3.5. 310) did mange to show some relative athleticism, running the
40 in the mid-5.2 range, while posting times of 4.77 in the short
shuttle and 7.33 in the 3-cone drill, both of which would have been
among the leaders at the position at the combine. Blackwell also had an
impressive vertical of 29 inches, but managed only 18 reps in the BP.
Fellow OG T-Bob Hebert (#6-3, 300), though, wasn't as athletic, running
in the 5.5 range for the 40, although he did post 29 reps in the BP. |
| Boise State (22/03) |
All but 4 NFL
teams were represented at the Boise State including a big contingent
from Cincinnati. Best news of the day for QB Kellen Moore was that he
measured in at a tad over 6 feet after he was measured under that mark
at the Senior Bowl. Must be all those stretching exercises. More to the
point, Moore reportedly threw the ball well at the Broncos pro day as
he complete 52-of-53 throws in passing drills. Meanwhile, WR Tyler
Shoemaker had a strong performance. Shoemaker caught every pass thrown
to him after running the 40-yard dash in 4.45 seconds, while posting a
37-inch vertical, 14 reps in the BP. Shoemaker also posted times of
4.25 in the short shuttle and 6.83 in the 3-cone drill. Other times at
the BSU workout weren’t quite as good. TE Kyle Efaw, for example,
barely cracked the 4.9 mark, while LB Byron Huot was clocked in over
5-flat. |
| Boston College (21/03) |
MLB Luke Kuechly was
the featured attraction at the BC pro day where roughly 25
teams had reps. For the most part, Kuechly stood on his combine
numbers, but did positional drills where he reportedly looked fluid.
Interestingly, the LB drills were run by coaches from Philadelphia who
asked to participate last week; the Eagles had a major need at MLB and
had been thought to be very interested in Kuechly, but have since
tarded for MLB DeMeco Ryans so may ultimately look elesewhere with the
15th pick overall. Meanwhile, CB Donnie Fletcher, who has pretty much been in free fall since a disappointing
week at the Senior Bowl, may have at least stopped the bleeding when he
reportedly ran in the 4.4 range at the Eagles workout. |
| Baylor (21/03) |
By all accounts Robert
Griffin was as good as advertised during his workout at Baylor’s Pro
Day. Working in front a throng that was described as almost ’chaotic’
at times and included a full contingent from Washington including owner
Dan Snyder, G.M. Bruce Allen, head coach Mike Shanahan, and offensive
coordinator Kyle Shanahan, Griffin looked crisp completing a scripted
series of 78 passes, 74 of which were completed. Meanwhile, WR
Kendall Wright reportedly ran well under 4.50 seconds for his
40,compared to 4.61 at the combine, and impressed with his accelertion
wen the ball was in the air. Hard to know what to make of
Wright's official 4.41 clocking, thoug, as RB Terrance Ganaway cut a
full-two tenths off his combien 40-time suggesting that it may be as
much the track. |
| Rutgers (21/03) |
The early reports are that WR Mohamd Sanu ran much better at the Rutgers pro day than at the combine where he clocked a pedestrian 4.67. Sanu, though, reportedly was hand-timed in the low 4.4 range, which adjusting for the track probably computes to the low 4.5 range. Meanwhile, DE Justin Francis, who did not run at the combine, posted average 40 times in the 4.90 range an had an atheltic 36-inch vertical. Fellow DE Manny Abreu (6-2, 271) did not test as well, running over 5 seconds in the 40 while posting only 18 reps in the BP. Same for OT Desmond Stapleton (6-5, 301) who ran the 40 in around 5.45 seconds while posting just 20 reps in the BP, while FB Joe Martinek measured in at only 5-11, 225, but reportedly ran under 4.60 seconds in the 40. |
| San Diego State (21/03) |
MLB Miles Burris, who
did not run at the combine, showed some speed as he reportedly ran in
the low-to-mid 4.7 range for the 40 and was very quick in the
three-cone drill; then just for effect, Burris threw in a back flip. |
| Texas (20/03) |
At least 30 teams were represented at the Texas pro day including Chicago which sent head coach Lovie Smith and Cincinnati defensive co-ordinator Mike Zimmer. Safety Christian Scott (6-0, 220), who was not at the combine had an impressivce workout as he posted times of 4.60 seconds in the 40, 4.28 in the short shuttle, and 7.00 in the 3-cone drill. |
| Iowa State (20/03) |
Iowa State CB Leonard
Johnson ran a much better 40 at the Hawkeyes' pro day as he lowered his
40 time from 4.71 at the combine to 4.53 today. OG Keleche Osemele
stood on most of his combine numbers, but did up his BP reps from 32 to
36. WR Darius Reynolds (6-2, 206) ran a resonably respectable 4.55 40
and a quick 6.77 in the 3-cone drill; he also had decent leaps of 35
inches in the vertical and 10-0 in the BJ, whereas his short shuttle
time of 4.28 would have been in the bottom half of receivers at the
combine. |
| North Carolina (20/03) |
At the UNC pro day, CB Charles Brown was officially credited with running a 4.51 40, over a full tenth faster than his time at the combine. However, just about all the UNC players who worked out at both the combine and the team’s pro day were running about a tenth faster at home meaning that Brown’s improvement may not be quite as impressive on second blush. Of former Tar Heels’ not invited to the combine, C Cam Holland (6-2, 317) had a decent day, running the 40 in the 5.2 range (once the track had beena djusted for) while posting 37 reps in the BP, along with a 29.5-inch vertical. DT Jordan Nix (6-2, 296) also ran well for a lineman, clocking the 40 in the 5.10 range; he also managed 30 reps in the BP and a 28.5-inch vertical. Safeties Jonathan Smith (6-2, 211) and Matt Merletti (5-10, 200) weren’t as fast relatively, as both failed to crack the 4.65 mark in the 40, although Merletti had 31 reps in the BP, while Smith had an athletic vertical of 37.5 inches. Same stories for receivers Brandon Foster (6-0, 205) and Christian Wilson (6-2, 250). WR Foster was only able to run in the mid-4.65 range and had a disappointing vertical of only 32 inches, while HB Wilson had a 40 time in the 4.9 range. Meanwhile, WR Dwight Jones, a mid-round prospect was not allowed to participate in the Tar Heels pro day because of his his involvement in advertising a New Year’s Eve party in his hometown of Burlington. Instead, Jones worked out for all of one scout - from Denver for the record. |
| Iowa (19/03) |
There was a good
turnout at the Iowa pro day that included GMs Kevin Colbert of
Pittsburgh, Green Bay‘s Ted Thompson, and Scott Pioli of Kansas City,
along with Chiefs head coach Romeo Crennel among the 23 teams
represented. Most were there presumably to see OT Riley Reiff who
reportedly was solid in positional workouts as he showed better agility
and technique than at last month’s combine. Meanwhile, OLB Tyler
Nielsen, who didn’t jump at the combine, posted athletic leaps of 37
inches in the vertical and 9-8 in the BJ. CB Shaun Prater, who didn’t
run at the combine because of a knee issue, posted a 40 clocking around
4.50 seconds. |
| Houston (19/03) |
As many as 21 teams had
reps at the Houston workout where QB Case Keenum tried to show that he
has the arm strength to make all the throws at the next level. Keenum
was smooth enough and showed good technique, but the jury is still out
on his overall velocity. Meanwhile, WR Patrick Edwards, who did not run
at the combine because of a quadriceps injury suffered at the Senior
Bowl, did a full workout, but ultimately wasn’t all that happy. Edwards
struggled to break the 4.6 mark in the 40, while, posting times of 4.25
seconds in the short shuttle and 7.12 in the 3-cone drill, neither of
which would have been close to the leaders at the combine, as well as
33-inch vertical. On the other hand, LB/DE Sammy Brown impressed,
running under 4.70 seconds in the 40, while posting a 37-inch vertical,
along with a time of 7.15 in the 3-cone and 20 reps in the BP. |
| Oregon State (16/03) |
WR James Rodgers, who
was clocked in a disappointing 4.67 seconds for the 40 at the combine,
reportedly improved his time at the Oregon State pro day down into the
low-to-mid 4.5 range. Rodgers also ran the 3-cone drill in 6.93 seconds
and the short shuttle in 4.19, although neither time was particularly
good, especially for a smallish wideout who is going to have to make it
at the next level largely on quickness. On the other hand, CB Brandon
Hardin, who was not at the combine, put on an athletic show; a big
corner who could also project to safety in the pros, ran in the
low-to-mid 4.4 range for the 40, while posting 24 reps, more than any
DB at the combine, in the BP. At the same time, FB/HBJoe Halahuni
weighed in at a slimmed down 240 pounds, ran the 40 in under 4.80
seconds, and had a very quick time of 6.70 seconds in the 3-cone. |
| Tennessee (16/03) |
DT Malik Jackson may
have been the biggest story, both literally and figuratively, at the
Tennessee pro day when he weighed in at 290 pounds. Jackson, who played
as an undersized DT at under 270 pounds and weighed 284 at the combine,
is hoping to show NFL teams that he can carry the extra bulk and figure
as a full-time DT rather than a situational type. At the same time, FB
Austin Johnson, who was not at the combine, impressed as the 6-0,
241-pounder ran well posting a 4.72 40, while recording 25 reps in the
BP. |
| Arizona State (16/03) |
Nice day for former Sun
Devils' CB Omar Bolden, who did not play in 2011 after suffering a
second torn ACL in his career last spring, simply because he was out
there, although his official 40 time of 4.60 was nothing special and
his shuttle times were very slow. Not so nice a day for MLB Vontaze
Burfict who
followed up a dismal combine, which included a pedestrian (with a
400-pound gorilla on its back) 40 clocking of 5.09, with a dismal pro
day effort in which he managed only 16 reps in the BP and looked slow
in the agility and positional drills; indeed, Burfict's short shuttle
time was over two full tenths slower than the slowest LB at the
combine. Meanwhile, DE Jamaar Jarrett certainly looked the part
at 6-6, 265, but didn't test all that well, clocking a 4.90 in the 40
(although that was better than his 5.02 at the combine) while posting
only 15 reps in the BP. |
| Michigan (15/03) |
An estimated 25 NFL teams had reps in Michigan to watch the Wolverines' pro day. That crowd included a full contingent from Pittsburgh including head coach Mike Tomlin and G.M. Kevin Colbert who were there likely to have another look at NT Mike Martin, who stood on his combine numbers, but was reportedly very quick and explosive in positional drills. In fact, most of the Wolverines' top prospects stuck with their combine numbers. CB Troy Woolfolk, who was not at the combine, though, did a full workout. The 5-11, 195-pound Woolfolk ran the 40 in the mid-to-high 4.5 range and had a 31-inch vertical, neither of which was particularly impressive, but managed 20 reps in the BP and had better times of 4.19 seconds in in the short shuttle, and 6.77 in the 3-cone drill. Meanwhile, DT Ryan Van Bergen, a 291-pounder who looks to be best suited to play a 5-tech DE at the next level, did 31 reps in the BP, while running as low as the low 4.90 range for the 40. Unheralded WRs Martavious Odoms and Kelvin Grady both ran under 4.5 seconds for the 40. TE Kevin Koger was not able to run a 40-yard dash due to a tweaked hamstring. Unheralded TE Steve Watson, who shifted from offense to defense throughout his UM career, did run and drew some attention when he ran the 40 in the low 4.6s. |
| Louisiana Tech (15/03) |
LBs Adrien Cole and Jay
Dudley both had pretty good days at the Louisiana Tech pro day. Cole
measured in at just 5-10.5, consideredably shorter than NFL teams
generally like their MLBs, but he ran reasonably well, posting times of
4.70 in the 40, 4.22 in the short shuttle and 6.99 in the 3-cone drill,
each of which would have been among the top half of inside backers at
the combine. Whereas Cole is a squatish LB, Dudley, who measured in at
6-4, 226 is longer and leaner, but also posted pretty good times of
4.72 in the 40, 4.25 in the short shuttle and 7.13 in the 3-cone drill.
At the same time, DE Matt Broha (6-4, 255) ran a 4.82 40, while
clocking decent times of 4.50 in the short shuttle and 7.26 in the
3-cone. |
| Virginia (15/03) |
All 32 teams were
represneted at the UVA pro day where DE Cam Johnson stood on most of
his combine numbers, but did particiate in positional drills and
reportedly didn’t look out of place when asked to take part in LB
drills. CB Chase Minnifield, who did not run at the combine as he was
recovering from ankle surgery, was only able to run in the mid-4.6
range and then sat out other drills complaining of tightness in a
hamstring. The consensus appears to be that Minnifield stock was
already slipping and his pro day efforts aren't likely to stop the
bleeding. |
| Oklahoma (14/03) |
Best news of the day at
the Sooners' pro day was that star DE Frank Alexander, the Big XII's
defensive player of the year this season, was simply able to play after
he was forced to sit out last month's combine with a heart problem. So
it was icing on the cake for the 6-4, 271-pound Alexander who had a
pretty decent day running the 40 in 4.76 while posting a 34.5-inch
vertical and a 9-9 BJ. Alexander's shuttle times, though, weren't
as good as only timed 4.57 seconds in the short shuttle and 7.55 in the
3-cone which would have been near the bottom for the position at the
combine. At the same time, OG Stephen Good lived up to his name and had
a good workout. The 6-5, 291-pounder did 34 reps in the BP, while
running a 5.13 forty and posting jumps of 30inches in the vertical and
9-4 in the BJ. SS Sam Proctor (6-0, 220) had an athletic 36-inch
vertical and a 10-4 BJ, but only timed 4.67 seconds in the forty and
7.23 in the 3-cone, while he had a decent time of 4.23 in the short
shuttle. Perhaps the most athletic performance of the day though was
turned in by LS James Washington, a 6-3, 210-pounder who had a 38-inch
vertical and a 11-5 BJ, while running the 40 in 4.58 seconds and
posting good times in the agility drills. |
| California (14/03) |
An estimated 25 teams
were represented at the Cal pro day where scouts were treated to
several athletic performances. LB Mychal Kendricks, who had one of the
most athletic performnces at last month's combine, for example, was
able to add to those credentials when he posted a time of 6.70 in the
3-cone drill; that's a full two-tenths faster than any LB at the
combine. Meanwhile, safety D.J. Campbell posted a solid all-around
performance with 22 bench press reps that would have tied for first
among safeties at the combine, while he ran a quick 4.51 40-yard dash
and had leaps of 38-inches in the vertical and 10-7 in the BJ, each of
which would have been among the leaders at the position at the combine.
The most surprising reslts at the Cal pro day, though, may have been
recorded by WR Michael Calvin, who only caught 20 passes this fall, but
made the all-workout team when the 6-2, 215-pounder ran in the 4.35
area for the forty in windy, rainy conditions, while posting leaps of
40.5 inches in the vertical and 11-1 in the BJ. |
| Florida State (14/03) |
For the most part, FSU
combine invitees Nigel Bradham, Zebrie Sanders and Andrew Datko stood
on their efforts in Indianapolis. Other former Seminoles who did work
out included WR Bert Reed, who ran a solid enough 4.46 40, but had
relatively slow clockings of 4.32 in the short shuttle and 7.21 in the
3-cone drill; the 5-10, 183-pound Reed also had a 34-inch vertical and
a 10-2 BJ. In fact, there wasn't a whole lot of speed at the FSU pro
day where safety Terrance Parks (6-2, 215) ran a 4.65 40, while
RB Jermaine Thomas (5-11, 192) ran a 4.62 and had times of 4.72 in the
short shuttle and 7.46 in the 3-cone. |
| Marshall (14/03) |
Pro scouts that trooped
to the Marshall pro day were curious to see if star DE Vinny Curry
could improve significantly on his near disastrous combine performance
where he barely broke the 5-flat mark in the 40. And by all accounts,
Curry indeed do much better at home running the 40 in the mid-to-high
4.6 to low 4.7 range. Curry also improved his vertical three inches to
35 and did 28 reps in the BP in which he did not participate at the
combine. |
| Michigan State (14/03) |
All 32 NFL teams were
represented at Michigan State's pro day, including Pittsburgh head
coach Mike Tomlin, where QB Kirk Cousins reportedly threw the ball very
well. Meanwhile, former QB Keith Nicol, who now plays WR, ran in the
4.6 range for the 40, while posting a 39-inch vertical. RB Edwin Baker
also reportedly ran under 4.5 seconds after timing 4.53 at the combine.
TE Garrett Celek, who was not at the combine, ran better than expected
when the 6-4.5, 250-pounder clocked in in the low 4.7 range for the
40, although his shuttle times of 4.39 in the short shuttle and
7.23 in the 3-cone weren't as quick. |
| Florida (13/03) |
Attendance wasn't
takenm, but it appeared to be far from a full house at the Gators' pro
day with only one NFL head coach - Jacksonville’s Mike Mularkey, a
former Gator who works just down the road - in attendance. WR/RB/KR
Chris Rainey, a former track star who was considered to be one of the
fastest players in the country, but who only ran a 4.50 forty at the
combine, was reportedly closer to the expected 4.3 ark at the Florida
pro day. Meanwhile, QB John Brantley ran in the 4.8 area and reportedly
threw the bal well after working on his mechanics and footwork the part
couple of months. |
| Toledo (13/03) |
Scouts from roughly 17 NFL teams showed up for the Rockets' pro day where ultra-productive WR Eric Page ran the 40 in the mid-4.50 range, a modest improvement from his disappointing 4.60 time at the combine. Fellow WR Kenny Stafford ran even better running in the 4.40 range for the 40-yard dash. |
| Western Michigan (13/03) |
WMU WR Jordan White ran
the 40 in just over 4.60 seconds which isn't vey good, but at least
slightly better than the rather pedestrian 4.69 he clocked at the
combine. |
| Pittsburgh (12/03) |
Pitt CB Buddy Jackson, who started one game in 4 seasons and never intercepted a pass, turned in one of the more athletic performances of the pre-draft process as he reportedly ran in the low 4.30-range in the 40 with at least one team clocking him unofficially as low as 4.25; Jackson also had a remarkable 11-9 broad jump. Meanwhile, both DT Chas Alecxih and DE/OLB Brandon Lindsey took up to a couple of tenths off their disappointing 40 times of 5.41 and 4.93 respectively. |
| Tulsa (12/03) |
WR/KR Damaris Johnson
was back on campus at Tulsa where he worked out well with his former
teammates, but probably felt more pressure answering questions about an
incident that got him suspended for the year after he and his
girlfriend were charged with felony embezzlement of merchandise from a
department store that she worked in. There will also be questions about
Johnson‘s size as he measured in at only 5-7, 171. Johnson, who became
the NCAA’s career leader in all-purpose despite not playing as a
senior, ran well, clocking under 4.50 seconds in the 40-yard dash, had
a vertical leap of 30 inches, and managed 13 reps in the bench press.
Meanwhile, QB G.J. Kinne measured in at 6-1, 223 and ran a quick 4.60
40, while Canadian OT Tyler Holmes tipped the scales at 6-4, 307 and
ran a 5.40 40 while posting 23 reps in the bench press. Unheralded DT
Tyrunn Walker showed some surprising athleticism as the 6-4,
298-pounder ran under 5.00 seconds for the 40. |
| Texas Christian (9/03) |
Approximately 14 NFL
teams had scouts at the TCU pro day where CB/KR Greg Jones reportedly
ran just under 4.50 seconds in the 40 and had a 38-inch vertical, while
WR Jonathan Jones had a 40.5-inch vertical. |
| Florida International (9/03) |
All 32 NFL
teams were reportedly represented at the FIU pro day where T.Y. Hilton,
who didn't run at the combine because of a quad injury, showed some
speed runnning the 40 in the 4.40 range with some teams getting him as
low as 4.35. Hilton also posted a 7.06 clocing in the 3-cone drill,
while QB Wesley Carroll measured in at 6-1, 202 and ran in the 4.70
range. |
| Oklahoma State (9/03) |
There was a full house at the Oklahoma State pro day where WR Justin Blackmon probably didn't have a great pro day workout, but it was still probably good enough to solidify his status as a top 5-10 pick this year. Blackmon's official 40-time today was 4.46 seconds, although most teams are likely to tick that up into at least the low-4.5 range because of the fast track they run on at Oklahoma State. And that is just about what was expected from Blackmon who is not considered to have track speed. What would have hurt Blackmon would have been to run in the 4.55-4.60 area on that fast track. Blackmon also had a good, but not great 35-inch vertical and dropped a couple of passes in the positional drills. However, given his size, as well as the body of work over his college career, it would appear that Blackmon did enough today. Remember, too, that former Georgia WR A. J. Green was also only just okay as his workouts last spring, but still was chosen 4th overall by Cincinnati and went to have an excellent rookie season.During passing drills, QB Brandon Weeden completed only 41 of 51 pass attempts which actually isn’t all that impressive when throwing against air; Weeden also timed out in around 4.90 seconds for the 40. DE Jamie Blatnick ran the 40 in 4.76 seconds, an improvement over his combine time of 4.90, while WR Josh Cooper, who was at the combine, but did not participate in on-field workouts, ran the 40 in 4.62 seconds, but caught the ball. Meanwhile, FS Markelle Martin did not participate in Friday's workouts as he continues to rehab from a torn lateral meniscus in his knee that also kept him from participating in the on-field portion of the combine. OT Levy Adcock, a surprise non-invitee to the combine, measured in at 6-5.5, 320 and posted decent numbers, clocking in the 5.25-5.30 range for the the 40, while registering a 27.5 vertical, 9-foot BJ, as well as times of 4.84 in the short shuttle and 7.84 in the 3-cone drill, but did not do the bench press. |
| Wyoming (7/03) |
Cowboys' junior RB Alvester Alexander ran well at the Wyoming pro-day. Alexander, who in at 5-11, 206, ran the 40 in around 4.4 seconds. |
| Clemson (8/03) |
As many as 29 NFL teams were in attendance including a heavy contingent from New York as both Jets' GM Mike Tannenbaum and head coach Rex Ryan and Giants' director of college scouting Marc Ross were at the Clemson pro day. DT Brandon Thompson, who did not run at the combine posted a 5.16 40 time at the Clemson pro day. Thompson's time included a quick 1.77 ten-yard split. FB Chad Diehl (6-2, 260), who didn't receive an invitation to the combine, ran in the 4.90 range for the 40, but was better in the vertical with a 31-inch and in the bench press where he did 28 reps. |
| Northwestern (8/03) |
Representatives from 25 teams attended the NU workout where WR Jeremy Ebert stood out. Ebert, who was not invited to the combine, ran a 4.38-second 40-yard dash, managed 16 reps in the bench press and reportedly looked smooth in his route running and receiving. Ebert caught passes from QB Dan Persa, who weighed in at 210 pounds and threw the ball impressively from the pocket. Persa also ran a 4.85 40 and had a vertical leap of 32 inches. |
| Washington (8/03) |
About half of NFL teams
sent reps to the Washington pro day including a large contingent of
Seattle scouts, although no one from the Seahawks front office. RB
Chris Polk weighed in at 212, down three or so pounds from the combine
and over 10 pounds less than at the Senior Bowl. Running indoors, Polk
reportedly posted a 4.49 electronic time in the 40-yard dash, down from
his disappointing time of 4.57 at the combine. On the other hand, WR
Jermaine Kearse did not significantly improve on his combine 40 time of
4.58 seconds and reportedly was not all that crisp getting in and out
of his breaks, but did catch the ball well. WR Devin Aguilar in at
5-11, 200 pounds and ran in the mid-to high 4.5 range, whi1le CB
Quinton
Richardson, who was never that productive at Washington, measured in at
5-11, 204 pounds and reportedly ran the 40 in just under 4.40 seconds. |
| Nebraska (8/03) |
As many as 22 teams
were represented at the Nebraska pro day where DE Jared Crick, who
didn’t lift at the because he was still recovering from a torn pectoral
muscle, managed a decent, but hardly great, 26 reps in the bench press.
Meanwhile, WR Brandon Kinnie ran well positing in the 4.45 range in the
40. |
| Mississippi State (8/03) |
About half of the 32
teams in the NFL were present at the Mississippi State workout
including the defensive line coaches for both Pittsburgh and Kansas
City as well as Green Bay director of college scouting John Dorsey. The
guy they were there to see was DT Fletcher Cox who for the most part
stood on his excellent combine performance and looked good in
positional drills. RB Vick Ballard was able to take a tenth of a
second off his somewhat disappointing combine 40 time of 4.65. Running
on a fast indoor track, Ballard timed in the 4.55 range and also looked
solid in positional drills during which he showed good blitz pick-up
skill and also caught the ball well. A couple of former Bulldogs’
offensive linemen not invited to the combine all got some long looks
from NFL teams in attendance. OT James Carmon measured in at 6-6, 330
with long arms and ran in the mid-5.30 for the 40, while posting decent
shuttle times for a big OL of 7.73 in the 3-cone drill and 4.80 in the
short shuttle; Carmon, though, only managed 22 reps in the bench press.
Fellow OT Carl Lawrence wasn’t as big at 6-4, 303, but was quicker and
more athletic running the 40 in the mid-5.2 range, while posting 28
reps in the BP. |
| Syracuse (8/03) |
Scouts from 29 NFL
teams were at the Syracuse pro day where DE Chandler Jones reportedly
looked smooth in positional drills for both a traditional 4-3 DE and
3-4 rush LB despite having battled the flu the past several days.
Junior WR/KR Dorian Graham, who was not at the combine also impressed
with an athletic vertical jump of 41 inches. The best story at SU,
though, may have been the participation of P Rob Long, a 2010 grad, who
is healthy and kicking again after undergoing successful treatment for
brain cancer. |
| Colorado (8/03) |
Roughly half of the
teams in the NFL were Roughly half of the teams in the NFL were
represented at the Buffs’ on-campus workout where RB Rodney Stewart had
a solid day. Stewart, one of the top RB prospects not invited to the
combine, ran a decent 4.54 40, but was quicker in the agility drills
where he timed 4.01 in the short shuttle and 6.81 in the 3-cone drill,
both of which would have put him among the leaders at the position at
the combine. Stewart also had decent numbers in both the BP (21 reps)
and vertical (36). WR Toney Clemons also showed some pure speed running
the 40 in under 4.40 seconds while posting times of 4.33 in the short
shuttle and 6.93 in the 3-cone drill as well as a 36-inch vertical. TE
Ryan Deehan, though, wasn’t as quick as he barely broke the 5-flat mark
in the 40, while QB Tyler Hansen clocked a 4.90 40. |
| Utah State (8/03) |
There were 15 NFL
scouts on hand for the Utah State pro day where RB Michael Smith put on
a very athletic performance. Smith who shared carries with Robert
Taubin, who was invited to the combine, ran under 4.40 seconds in the
40, had a 40.5-inch vertical and even put up 23 reps in the bench
press. Following the test and drills, some scouts put several
players through separate drills, such as Smith and Turbin running
routes and catching passes. |
| Western Kentucky (8/03) |
There were scouts from
only to teams - San Francisco and Tennessee - at the WKU pro day where
RB Bobby Rainey had a good day. Rainey, WKU’s all-time leading rusher,
but was no invited to the combine, ran the 40 in the low-to-mid 4.5
range and showed better quickness in the 3-cone drill where his time of
6.61 seconds would have been the second best among RBs at the combine.
Meanwhile CB Derrius Brooks likely sent NFL pro personnel people back
to the WKU tapes when he ran under 4.40 seconds in the 40, posted a
38-inch vertical and like Rainey posted a quick 3-cone drill time of
6.61 that would also have been the best among all corners at the
combine. |
| Miami (8/03) |
The Hurricnes
had as many bubble players not invited to the combine this year and
several of those had solid performances at the Miami pro day. DT
Micanor Regis measured in at 6-2.3, 304 and ran a very respectable 5.10
40 for a man that size; Regis also had a 30.5-inch vertical, posted 26
reps in the bench press and clocked 7.99 in the 3-cone drill.
Meanwhile, both WR LaRon Byrd and TE Chase Ford also showed good speed
for propsects at their respective positions. Byrd clocked a 4.46, had a
35-inc vertical and managed 15 reps in the bench press, but his 3-cone
drill time of (7.07) was a little slow compared with WRs at the
combine. For his part, Ford ran a 4.76 40, had a 33-inch vertical, and
did 20 reps in the BP, while his 3-cone time of 7.34 was also
relatively slow. C Tyler Horn measured in at 6-3.5, 297 and clocked a
5.26 seconds for the forty, had a 25-inch vertical leap, but manaed
only 19 reps in the BP and was also slow in the 3-cone drill with a
time of 8.16. On the other hand, DE Adewale Ojomo had a mostly
disappointing day as the 6-3, 255-pounder ran a slow 4.95 forty, and an
even lower 7.91 3-cone drill, while posting a 31-inch vertical and 23
reps in the bench press. |
| Wisconsin (7/03) |
Badgers’ WR Nick Toon
improved his somewhat disappointing combine 40 time by over a tenth of
a second at the Badgers’ pro day. Toon, who was clocked in at 4.54
seconds at the combine, was timed in 4.43 at his on-campus workout Toon
also improved his vertical by a couple of inches as he leaped 39
inches. CB Antonio Fenelus also improved his very slow combine time in
the 40 (4.68) running a 4.51.DE Louis Nzegwu, who was not invited to
the combine had a very athletic performance when the 250-pounder ran
the 40 in 4.57 seconds, had a 41.5-inch vertical and a broad jump of
almost 11 feet. FS Aaron Henry, one of the bigger surprises among those
not invited to the combine, ran a 4.53 forty. |
| Southern Cal (7/03) |
By all accounts, USC OT
Matt Kalil turned in an excellent performance during position drills at
the USC pro day, in the process confirming his status of one of, if not
the top prospect for the 2012 draft at a position other than QB.
Meanwhile, Marc Tyler had hoped to improve on his disappointing 4.76 40
time at the combine, but instead actually was slower clocking only a
4.81 time. The other newsworthy notes to come out of the USC pro day
involve the health of DTs DaJohn Harris and Armond Armstead. Harris
reportedly revealed that doctors at the combine found he has patent
foramen ovale, that is, a small hole in the heart that increases
vulnerability to a stroke, but Harris indicated that he has since been
re-examined and was told that he's 100% healthy. On the other hand,
Armstead, who was not cleared to play last season by USC after he was
briefly hospitalized with an undisclosed illness last spring, measured
in at 6-5, 285, but will not work out until April 9. |
| Texas A&M (7/03) |
A&M QB Ryan
Tannehill was again unable to workout as he continues to rehab from a
foot injury; Tannehill, along with several other top Aggies' prospects
will work out at a special pro day on March 28. WR Jeff Fuller, who did
not run at the combine, looked sluggish as he clocked a 4.65 in
the 40, along with times of 4.35 in the short shuttle and 7.10 in the
3-cone drill, both of which would have been near the bottom of WRs at
the combine. |
| Louisville (7/03) |
WR Josh Bellamy ran
well posting a 40-time uder 4.45 seconds. |
| Kent State (7/03) |
Only 5 teams were at
the KSU pro day, but they saw several athletic performances by former
Flashes. Wide-body DT Ishmaa’ily Kitchen, for example, who weighed in
at 335-pounds, did 35 reps in the bench press, ran a 5.35 forty and had
a 31-inch vertical. C Chris Anzevino actually went one better than
Kitchen when he did 36 reps in the bench press, ran well with times
under 5.20 seconds in the 40 and 4.62 in the short shuttle and also
posted a 31-inch vertical. Meanwhile, WR Sam Kirkland also put on
athletic display, running the 40 in under 4.5 seconds, while posting a
44-inch vertical and a 10-10 broad jump. |
| Alabama (7/03) |
All 32 NFL
teams were represented at the Alabama pro day, although it wasn’t quite
a who’s who in the league in attendance as most top personnel people
will wait for a second Tide on-campus workout on March 29th when
injured stars RB Trent Richardson, SS Mark Barron and LB Courtney
Upshaw plan to workout. NT Josh Chapman, who is
recovering from off-season knee surgery, also didn’t participate in
on-field drills, but did 29 reps in the bench press. Chapman, though,
does not expect to be fully healed until June or July so will not be
able to workout prior to the draft. Tide players that did run the 40
today included CB DeQuan Menzie (4.61) and WR Darius Hanks (4.66) who
both betterede their combine 40 times, although their pro day numbers
still weren't al that good. Menzie, though, did post a pretty good time
of 6.93 in the 3-cone drill. Meanwhile, LB Donta Hightower ran the
short shuttle (4.68) and 3-cone drill (7.55), but both were less than
impressive times that would have been the slowest at the position at
the combine. One former Alabama player not at the combine who had a
decent day was TE/FB Brad Smelley (6-2, 237) who ran a 4.77 40, while
posting times of 4.50 in the short shuttle and 7.15 in the 3-cone
drill. |
| Georgia Tech (6/03) |
Attendance was
not take, but it is believed that all 32 NFL teams were represented at
the Georgia Tech pro day where head coaches Mike Smith of Atlanta and
Chicago's Lovie Smith were in attendance. And while it was as much a
courtesy call for the Falcons' Smith, the Bears' Smith had to come half
way across the country, just possibly to check out Yellow Jackets' WR
Stephen Hill who has been rocketing up draft boards across the league
after he put on a very athletic show at the combine that included a
4.36 40 clocking. Hill didn't run at the Tech pro day, but did do
positional drills and reportedly caught the ball very well. Fellow WRs
Embry Peeples (4.50), Roddy Jones (4.53) and Tyler Melton (4.59) did
run with mixed results, while LB Steven Sylvester had a decent day
posting a 4.75 40 clocking and 23 reps in the bench press. DE Jason
Peters led all Yellow Jackets with 28 BP reps, while running a 4.83 40,
while CB Rashaad Reid ran a 4.56 forty. |
| Arkansas (6/03) |
After a disappointing
combine that culminated a disappointing senior season, WR Greg Childs
had scouts going back to tape from his junior season after a very
athletic performance at the Hogs' pro day. Childs cut more than a tenth
off his average combine 40 time (4.55) as he ran under 4.45 seconds
today; he also bested his vertical at the combine by over 4 inches as
he leapt 40-6 inches. On the other hand, WR Joe Adams wasn't able to
better his combine time in the 40 as he again clocked a 4.55, while
fellow WR Jairus Wright stood on his electric 4.42 time from the
combine. All three wideouts then caught passes from former Arkansas QB
Rayn Mallett who returned to campus to help out his former teammates.
|
| Auburn (6/03) |
No Cam Newton this
year, but a couple of former Tigers who were overlooked when the
combine invites were sent out had impressive workouts for pro scouts
that came to Auburn's pro day. SS Neiko Thorpe (6-1, 198), in
particular, ran
under 4.45 seconds for the 40, while posting a vertical leap of 38
inches and 11-5 in the BJ, although he also only managed 4 reps in the
bench press. LB Eltoro Freemen, on the other hand, led the way today
with 28 reps in the bench press, while posting a 4.82 40 time as well
as impressive leaps of 36.5 inches in the vertical and 11-5 in the
broad. |
| Illinois (05/03) |
All but three
teams were represented at the Illini pro day including the Patriots who
sent diretor of college scouting Jon Robinson. Both DE Whitney Mercilus
and WR A.J. Jenkins stood on their combine 40 times, but did run the
short shuttle and 3-cone drills. Mercilus timed the short shuttle in an
average for DEs 4.38 seconds and the 3-cone in a very good for DEs
7.03. Mercilus, though, reportedly looked quick and explosive in
pass-rush drills and created a buzz among scouts with how well he did
in OLB as he was smooth and fluid in his drops and even showed good
hands. Meanwhile, Jenkins finished the 3-cone
in 6.73 seconds and the short shuttle in 4.03, times which would have
been 2nd and 5th respectively among WRs at the combine. CB Tavon Wilson
(5-11, 205), who projects to safety at the next level, ran a
respectable 4.55 forty, while posting average times of 4.16 in the
short shuttle and 7.04 in the 3-cone drill; he also had a 32-inch
vertical. |
| Indiana (05/03) |
WR Damarlo Belcher fessed up to NFL personnel people at the Hoosiers' pro day that he was dismissed from the team nine games into the season for failing a drug test. Unheraded CB Dre Muhammad reportedly turned some heads after running a 4.39 forty. |
| Georgia (05/03) |
All but two (Dallas and
Chicago) were represented at the UGA workout, but winds gusting to 20
MPH put something of a damper on things especially for TE Orson Charles
who hoped to make a statement and run under 4.7 for the 40. Instead,
Charles was only able to average around 4.82 while running into the
wind and against the wind. Charles, though, impressed in the bench
press where he had 35 reps and reportedly was fluid in positional
drills, but his leaps of 30-inches in the vertical and 9-5 broad jump
would have been in the lower half of those at the combine. CB Brandon Boykin weighed in at 181 pounds and did 16 reps
in the bench press but didn't run as he is still rehabbing from a
broken fibula suffered at the Senior owl; Boykin hopes to hold a
private workout on April 9. |
| Hawai'i (05/03) |
With the exception
of half dozen or so teams, just about everyone was reresented at
the Hawai'i workout where LB Corey Paredes ran a 4.55 40, while WR
Royce Pollard clocked a 4.57 and LB Aaron Brown a 4.77. |
| Cincinnati (02/03) |
At the Bearcats pro day, 28 of 32 NFL were represented iclunding almost a full contingent of staff from the hometown Bengals who spent a lot of time with RB Isaiah Pead. Star of the day, though, was unheralded TE Adrien Robinson, who started only one year for the Bearcats, and caught just 12 passes in that season, but he turned in an eye-opening athletic performance as the 6-4, 264-pounder ran the 40 in the 4.55 range, while posting jumps of 39.5 inches in the vertical and 11-3 in the broad jump; he also clocked 4.37 in the short shuttle, 11.59 in the long shuttle and 7.11 in the 3-cone drill, each of which would have put him in the top 5 at the position at the combine. Meanwhile, QB Zach Collaros measured in at just 5-11 and 217 pounds, but posted a decent 4.73 40 clocking and reportedly threw the ball well, while WR DJ Woods (5-10, 180) ran a respectable 4.50 40 and had a 37-inch vertical, but managed only 9 reps in the benc press. LB JK Schaffer measured in at 6-0, 237 and posted a solid 26 reps in the BP, but didn't run because of an injury. |
| Miami (O) (02/03) |
Miami OG Brandon Brooks
was one of the most notable players in all college football not invited
to the combine, but he made up for lost time at the Redhawks' pro day.
Brooks measured in at a robust 6-5, 345, but still put on an athletic
display runnning the 40 in around 5.10 once the quick track was
accounted for; Brooks also posted 36 reps in the bench press, had a
32-inch vertical and posted timesin both the short shuttle and 3-cone
drill that would have been among the leaders among offensive linemen at
the combine. In fact, all of Brooks' numbers would have been near the
top for the position at Indianpolis. |
| Missouri
(01/03) |
Sixteen NFL teams were represented at Missouri's pro day. For the most part, TE Michael Egnew, DT Dominique Hamilton, DE Jacquies Smith, and WR Jerrell Jackson, who attended the combine, sat out most of the drills, but Egnew did make a late decision to particiapte in the jumps and ended up improving his combine numbers (which were already the top at the position) with a personal best 37.5 vertical and 11-3 in the broad jump. Among former Tigers not at the combine OG Austin Wuebbels managed 40 reps in the bench press which would have been the third best figure at the combine, while fellow OG Jayson Palmgren was on a similar pace, but had to stop and sit out the rest of the day when he strained his hamstring. WR Wes Kemp (6-3.5, 223) ran the 40 in 4.55 seconds and had a 34.5 vertical. |
